How conversion works
The browser decodes the source image into pixels, draws those pixels to Canvas, and encodes the Canvas again in the selected format. This is a visual conversion path rather than a container-only rewrite.
Metadata and transparency
Canvas export is intended for image pixels, so source metadata such as EXIF is not preserved by this workflow. JPEG also has no alpha channel; transparent areas are filled with white before export.
Choosing the quality value
The quality value mainly affects lossy encoders such as JPEG and WebP. PNG remains lossless, so changing the quality field does not behave like JPEG compression quality.
Limitations
Available input and output formats depend on the image codecs supported by the browser. Very large images may use significantly more memory during conversion.
